The 1st and 2nd graders have enjoyed learning about life cycles. Our field trip to the Butterfly house was filled with excitement. The students created a flying butterfly and had the opportunity to hold a live butterfly if brave enough. Also, the students learned interesting facts about butterflies. Just ask us and we will share!!
The 1st graders have started this week learning the long 'e' sound spelled with e, ee. They are also learning compound words and contractions.
The 2nd graders will be reviewing this week and will start times tables. They already know the 0 and 1 family.
Both classes have started the writing process for a How-To Article. We have brainstormed some great ideas like how to ride a bike; how to tie a shoe, how to make a birdhouse, and so much more. We will be hanging them up in the classroom when the writing process is finished.
We continue to practice for the play. We have worked really hard and don't want to miss it. Please make sure the students are there for the 7:00 performance and we hope you enjoy the show!!!

We are off to a great start for the New Year! When we returned from vacation we dove right back into our routine. The children have had a great transition!
In Language Arts both classes focused on Proper Nouns and have learned how to discover them in their reading. We also learned that a good reader uses many different strategies to aid them in comprehension. One of the strategies is asking the author's purpose.
The first grade reviewed the short vowel sounds for e, u. They have enjoyed our last few stories we read to you. The second grade learned the /ew/ sound spelled oo,ou, ew. We had many discussions about friendship and created a Wanted Poster for a new friend.
In Math, the 1st and 2nd grade continue to build their problem solving skills. The first grade are learning to count by 25's which will lead to counting quarters. The thermometer along with temperature has been introduced and we had the opportunity to gauge the temperature as the weather dropped. The second grade has learned up to the 12th family. They review skip counting which is a step into multiplication. We started a new theme, "Children Around the World". With this theme we learn about a country with each lesson.
We have enjoyed learning about the Presidents in Social Studies. We just finished our study on George Washington and look forward to a new President.
In Science, we have learned the first step in the scientific method which is "Questioning". We will be using the scientific method to develop a class experiment for the DCS Science Fair. We have brainstormed some ideas but our looking for some more. So please be thinking of some at home.
In Bible we have been focusing on Obedience. We have studied Ephesians 6:1 and realized that God commands us to obey and honor our parents. In saying so, I respect each one of you and am thankful for your dedication to Christian Education. I appreciate the opportunity to teach your child and I pray for their growth spiritually and academically! I hope you are doing the same! God Bless!

Today, One of the students said "I love school!" I told them that I agree and said that the 1st and 2nd grade is my favorite class. We really enjoy learning together and love to laugh with our friends.
Our activities today were filled with new information. The first graders learned about the Hundreds place and measured with a yardstick. They reviewed the short e sound and discovered quotation marks! The second graders learned the /ow/ sound spelled with 'ou' and 'ow'. They experienced with similies and were able to share their ideas with their fellow classmates. The second grade learned how to add up all currency and are looking to practice at home.
The class also started to be exposed to the three branches of our government. We discussed the president's race and all that goes into it. Then we focused on George Washington for Social Studies and learned some fun facts! (Please ask us.)
We ended the day by practicing our Christmas Concert songs. We hope to see you all there and wish that you will be blessed by all!

Thanks to all those who helped with our Box Top Activity. We are grateful for those who collected box tops and saved them for our school so we could enjoy a victory together as a class. All the students loved bowling. They enjoyed cheering each other on and competing against each other. They had a great time riding in a bus on the way there and back. Thank you for all those who helped make this activity come together. Here is a video that shares all the fun we had.

Wow, our class has been really busy! Over the past week we have finished our 6th Math Test and also our first Language Arts Unit.
Both classes took a unit test to see what we had learned. In first grade we learned beginning and ending sounds, vowel and consonant sounds, Nouns and Verbs, complete sentences and predicting.
The second grade learned blending sounds that made the long a, e, i sounds. They learned how to make words plural and what to do with Proper Nouns and Irregular Plurals.
We received a letter from Faith Baptist School in Germany. They sent us a picture along with the names to each student. We look forward to getting individual pen pals from their class.
We celebrated all our hard work and focus in the first card marking by having a "ball party." We played a few games with a ball and ate snack because everyone worked as a team to make good choices.
Please keep practicing spelling words, Bible verses, and Books of the Old Testament. Be looking for these as they come home. Thanks for all your help!

Here is a video of class pictures. Along with it is a song the students have been learning for the books of the Old Testament. Please help your child learn the books of the Bible with this song. Thanks!

Team Usewicz started the day with chapel. Praising our Lord is a great way to begin our fellowship together! In the morning we focused on Language Arts.
The second grade worked on the long a sound spelled 'ai' and 'ay'. They also worked on inflected endings -es,-s,-ing. The first grade reviewed the short 'u' sound.
Dr. Fischer the Dentist visited us in the morning and reminded everyone how important it is to keep your teeth healthy. We enjoyed looking at all the models he brought us.
We finished our day with a few specials and Science. The class reviewed our senses by singing a song. The first and second graders were given a situation and they had to tell a partner what senses were used.
Our day was blessed and busy!
